THE TURF

RANGITIKEI MEETING GREATFOUD STAKES WON BY IMAROSE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) "■ Marton, March 25. The second day of the Bangitikei races was fine, and there was a good attendance. ' The going was good. The totalisator handled <£12,100, making the total for tho meeting .623,659, a decrease of ,£1199 on last year's figures. Only foill' acceptors were in the Clifton Handicap. It was a good betting race between Simple Sam and Tyson, but at the finish the latter had the call. From a good 6tart Sir-Moutoa was first out, but at thi end of a furlong Tyson was out two lengths from Simple Sara. This was the order into the straight, when the chestnut gelding ranged up to Tyson. In a hard finish the latter held the advantage and won. Sir Moutoa was three lengths off. Iting Chiara was a hot order in the Raiigitoto Hack Handicap. She duly won. The IVin of Tj;son in the opening event made King Chiara look a certainty. Bivouac was first into the straight, followed by Martyress, but the pair were easily disposed of by King Chiara, who finished full of running. Vladineau was fourth.

The Hurdle Race was a good contest, and resulted in an exciting finish between the favourite, Naupata, and The Diver. Over the first part Katua was in charge from The Diver, with the favourite well back. Entering the last halfniile the favourite moved up, and Katua fell away beaten. The Diver arid Naupata rose at the last fence together, and ran to the post 6ide by side. In the last couple of strides Naupata gained the advantage and won by a head. Moutoa Girl, who jumped badly, was third, and ICatua was next. Agatha Green's rider lost both his irons and the mare bolted a couple of -rounds before being pulled up. The Maiden Hack Handicap brought out a field of ten runners. Waitomo was a firm favourite, but there was also a lot of support for Vladian. Durane was the first to bejrin, and, followed by Iceberg, led to the half distance, where'the latter got his head in front. A few yards further on Blue Thread came with a fast run, and, outting down the leader, won comfortably by a length. Waitomo was half a length away third. Vladian was fourth and then came Durane and GlentullocK Blue Thread was the absolute outsider of the field.

Ratana was the only withdrawal from the Greatford Stakes, leaving seven runners. _ Ararat was a good favourite, but she'did very little better than in the Cup and a' poor third was her portion. Imarose took charge as soon as the field settled down, and, racing kindly, he led the *;hole way. Sir Alba, who got into a lot of trouble, was close up second, and then came Ararat, Square Deal, ByTon, and Lady Moutoa in that order. The Hick Welter Handicap provided the finest finish of the meeting, heads only separating the placed horses. At the start Draft .and Queen's Post gave a lot of bother, and the latter was left several lengths. Draft and Master Moutoa led round the back, but at the home bend the field bunched. Entering the straight Sylvandale. and Miralma came fast on the outside, but in a close finish the Foxton horse held his own and won by a head. RaupaTa and Draft were next to the placed horses.

Another good finish took place in the Open Welter Handicap, when Combustion doKned a hot favourite in Ratana. At the start, Austin, on the rails. Ratana and New York jumped out together, and ran in a line to the home turn, where Ratana shook them off.. In the straight Combustion came very fa6t, and after a good finish won by a neck. Improve was close up third. The concluding event saw some spirited investment amongst the followers of Martingale, Tiora, and Bivouac. The lastnamed, on the fence, was first out. and led the whole way. Martingale did not get a good passage in the first part, and only got fourth at the finish. Glacier was a. neck in front of. Vladineau for second place.

RICCARTON TRACK NOTES,

C3y Toleffrapfc.—Special G'oirei con clfinVi Christchurch, March 35. A grass track was opened this morning for all horses engaged at the Easier meeting. Most of the fast work was <lono on the plough, which was very fast. Tho best work of the morning was done by Einporador, Autumnus, Nightwatch, and First Glanco; and, all things taken into consideration, there was nothing to choose between, the four of them. Xanthos was given a few lengths' start of Nones over three-quarters of a mile. Though Nones was kept well on the outeido she caught Xanthos some distance from tho post, and found no difficulty in holding him to tho finish. It was a really fine piece of work. Merry Guest finished strongly at tho end of a rather fast five furlongs. Battle Eve and Flyine Start were galloped on the grass. Both colts were ridden out with hands and heels. They pulled up well, and are both in fino health. Bimeter looks in great heart. He was not asked to extend himself while sprinting a few furlongs. Honesty galloped very well, and gave Charmilla as much as she could do to stay with her. Both mares pulled up well and not distressed.

Somnambulist, who has plenty of speed for a few furlongs, galloped five furlongs with Merry Trick over the first two furlongs. She cleared right: away from her opponent, but she stopped to nothing over the last furlong, and Merry Trick was easily the best when the post was reached.

Maltegarde was lame before she went out to gallop with Camulus, and tho pair were not extonded.

Emperador galloped in great style today. Banksia, who was sent witii him, was given a tew lengths' start over six furlongs. Tho mare made the pace very hot, but once into the straight Einperador, wlio had been running very wide, soon gatiierod her up, anil when once he got on terius with nor ine mare collapsed. They were tarrying about even weights, it wus an especially lino pieuo ot work.

lleval has wrenched his fetlock joint rather bauiy, alia is a very doubtiul starter at the meeting. •feg galloped inucn more generously than, usual in ner sprint with Down. She had a snuae the uestot it all the way. The ni'at of tho visiting brigade arrived from the north yesterday, Cnortlo and Multiply from tusborne, and Croesus troui iNapier. Chortle, who looks very forward and muscular, was given steady wort, ana pulled very hard. Multiply went two rounds at a steady pace, and with great freedom. Croesus, in hue condition, looks much better tnan he did at Wellington. Don Francisco was no use to Nightwatch over six furlongs. The big horse was going easily at tae finish,- and the time was good. Autunmus put up a guod penoimance over six furlongs. One of two horses got over the distance in' a (shade faster time, but the manner in which he disposed of Adjutant over the last furlong was impressive. Ho was sound enough when pulled up. Warstcp uid not have to extend himself to beat Chrysotis over a mile. She pulled up well. Though Chrysotis was beaten her performance was decidedly good.

. Countess Tolstoi ran about seven furlongs well this morning at an oven pace all tli© way. Derrett is giving Fabrikofi a lot of strong work, and the colt seems to like doing it. I'jrst Glance reeled off lier seven-fur-long task ill great form. M'Grath did not ask Tanuhauser and Martigues to do their utmost, both galloped freely. Martigues in. particular went in improved style. Encore is getting his pace back again. He was only carrying a, feather-weight, but the five furlongs ho ran on the grass was good from a time test, and he linished well. Lady Veles ran seven furlongs fairly well, considering it was the first time she had been asked to cover so much ground. Samisen' was stopping to nothing at tho end of six furlongs, and the time was slow. The jumping Sno'wraker had, must ham stiffened her up, for she could not have galloped worse. She was to have gone the first live -of seven furlongs with ■Sthenic, but she could not go a furlong and the timo was only moderate j Free was full ,of running at the end or lier nve-furlonc sprint. Sartorze was ridden, .out this morning for the first time since he raced. He was not carrying much weight, and very few horses galloped as well this morning, for he ran the first part very fast, and yet finished strongly. At a meeting of the trustees' of Tauherenikaii Kacecourse it was decided to donate a cup to the Wairarapa Racing Club, to be added to the stake for the Pnncpal race at the Summer meeting, Acceptances for the first day's events at the Feilding Jockey Club's Meeting close on Saturday at 8.30 p.m. AcceptM <fs fo . r , the Waiata Hack Handicap and Maiden Scurry close at the same time.
