ABOUT POCKETKNIVES
EXTRAORDINARY WAR DEMANDS. 'Writing to its agent in New Zealand, a Sheffield firm of cutlers, which does an extensive business throughout the Empire, writes:— "For the last few months business has been in a very difficult condition. Orders have been few and far between, except for pocket cutlery, for which we have more orders than we can make under present circumstances. Apart from the fact-that a large number of our men have enlisted, the Government requirements for heavy pocketknives have been so large that manufacturers competed against one another for the available workmen, which, of course, has sent up the price of labour enormously. The fact has been that most of the cutlers in Sheffield who make this class of knife have had th6ir whole time taken up with them, and it has been impossible to manufacture any of the cheaper grades of pocket-knives. This state of affairs wo >dpe will come to an end shortly, but the extra cost of living and the high wages cutlers have been earning on Government work, has caused a demand for hi"her wages throughout the trada."
