OBITUARY

MR. ALLAN MAGUIRE. The death occurred on Wednesday of Air. Allan Maguire, an old and wellknown resident of Wellington, who has P? 00 -™ 1 ? for 501116 months past. ■Liio deceased, who was 71 years of age, was born at Newry, County Down, Ireland. and came out to Auckland in i\>m. pany. with his brother fifty-six years ago, having been, ordered abroad for the benefit of his health. The two brothfortune on the Thames goldnelds, and afterwards followed the rush to the West Coast. On" his return to Auckland, Mr. Maguire, wno was a stonemason by trade, wont in ior contracting, and amongst other works there constructed the waterworks. near the Three Lamps, did the lovelhng work at Emily Place, built the oJ'l Opera House, the Arcade in Queen otreet. and the railway bridge at Newmarket. He then undertook the mercin>", oi the Belgrove tunnel, on the Midland railway, a big work, which he ••omPielco in the brief space of three years. JV; work done, by Mr. Maguire in Wellington is perhaps better known. He was one of the contractors for a section of the Ta Aro reclamation, and ouilt the King's Chambers, Victorian College, the Grand Hotel, the Wellington Meat Export Company's refrigerating works at Ngahauranga, Staples and Co's malthonse, and the city trauiivay tunnel through Mount Victoria. These are only a few of the many structural works that he waa _ concerned 11 as builder. Mr. Maguire was a director of Staples and Co.'s brewery, one of the largest shareholders in tbe Halswell Quarry Company, of Christchurc'n, a partner in the South Wellington Brick Company, and Pearson and Co., wine and spirit merchants. For some years now he had been living practically in retirement, but in former years he was a prominent members of the Wellington Racing Club, and lor some years was a member of tbe Wellington Bowling Club. He leaves a widow and family of three, two 5011s and a daughter— Messrs. C. Maguiro (of Wellington), J. E. C. Maguire, of the staff of St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, and Mrs. Len. M'Kenzia, of Dufl'erin Street. I
