THE CALL OF EMPIRE
RESPONSE OF FOOTBALLERS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Chrlstohurch, March 22. It is estimated that between 150 and 200 footballers had been drawn from the Canterbury Rugby Union's various competitions as'a result of the call for Expeditionary Forces. The chairman, at the annual meeting of delegates on Saturday night, made reference to the splendid response of footballers to the call of Empire. As a result. of the heavy levy. of players the union was faced with a curtailment of its approaching season's competitions compared- with other years. It was suggested that shield competitions, be deleted this season, and that teams play out in the country as often as possible. •The suggestion did not find inuch favour, mainly on the score of expense. The matter was finally left to the in-coming-committee to decide.
