JAPANESE RAPE SEED
Japanese rape seed having recently been ottered for salo in New Zealand, mid aa considerable doubt existed as to whether this seed was of a variety suitablo for fattening live stock, r.ho Secretary of Agriculture, Industries, and Commerce cabled to the British Consul at Tokio on 16th instant as follows: — "Is Japanese rape seed forage variety or the annual oil-producing kind? If both produced cablo trade description former." A reply has ju6t been received from His Excellency the British Ambassador as under: —''Referring to your telegram of March 16, Japaneso rapo seed mostly annual oil-producing variety. Hokkaido grows foreign variety called Hamburg. L'arbury llenty Company British firm Kobe has been expolting to Australia considerable quantities Hokkaido seed under name of Esses rape." This information should assist New Zealand importers to secure the proper variety, and should minimise the risk of their getting the comparatively useless birdseed rape." The daily milk supply at the'Mangatainoka cheese factory is approximately 1250 gallons, about 50 gallons less than was delivered during the corresponding period of last year. The tests for tho last period, ended March 19, varied from 3.2 t0.4.6, the average being 3.8. For February, the average test was 3.70 per cent: of butter-fat. —l'ahiatua correspondent.
