WET CANTEENS
MINISTER'S ATTITUDE DEFINED. Referring to the letter concerning wet canteens addressed to him by the Moderate League the Hon. Jas. Allen said yesterday:—"My attitude is absolutely clear. I see no need for any wet canteen, and I have no intention of recommending it. I think that all our objects can be attained without establishing a wet canteen at Trentham. As I said to the Moderate League, I am not bound by any law to adhere to one definite opinion on the subject. My mind is open to conviction, but I think it will take a great deal to convince me that it would bo a. wise thing to establish a wet canteen at the camp. Besides, such a step-would bo against the law, and I have no desire to break the law, unless there is a reason sufficiently urgent to justify me in so' doing, and I see no such urgent reason at the present time. I am convinced that at present the proper thing to do is to keep the wet canteen out of the camp."
