SHORTAGE OF FODDER

VICTORIA IMPORTING LUCERNE. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) Melbourne, March 17. A deputation of users of fodder pointed out to the Stat© Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. W. Hutchinson) that a year ago chaff was procurable tit £3 15s. per ton; it now stood at £10 10s. It was calculated that there, was a shrinkage of two hundred thousand tons in the fodder stocks in Victoria, and prices did not show a tendency to ease. Tho Minister of Agriculture replied that there was not much hope of relief. The Government was importing lucerne from California at £8 10s. landed. Chaff bought from New Zealand at £5 to £5 155., with bags, freight, and other charges, l cost £9 to £9 15s. landed at Melbourne. Also there were risks in importing from different countries owing to various stock diseases.
