WANTED ACCESS.
TO' THE WALLACE STREET • TRAMS. A deputation of residents waited on the City Council last evening to draw attention to difficulty attending approach to the Wallace Street tram from Wright Street. The deputation was introduced'by Councillor J. Godber, who read a petition- bearing on the question. Mr. J. G. Dalrymple, the first speaker,/said that the matter on which the deputation waited'on the council was one of very great'importance to the residents of Wright Street, Carringtoii Street, Salisbury. Terrace,. and other streets in the vicinity. The petition,, which had been read by Councillor Godber, contained 238 names, all adults, and the number could have easily been doubled. What was wanted was a proper approach to the Wallace Street cars from Wright Street. The present steps were quite unfit for use in bad weather, or on dark nights and were at all times impossible for elderly people. Residents would be well satisfied With the use of a proper right-of-way through Hudson's, pipe yards. They asked the council to Temember that the winter was coming on and they would like something done as soon as possible. Two ladies also spoke in support of tho request. The Mayor (Mr. 3. P. Luke), 111 reply explained that the matter urged by the deputation was not newi The council had already given it consideration and had passed a resolution to acquire sufficient land tto give residents access to the trams' through Hudson's pipe yard. At present there were difficulties of finance to be overcome, but the council was fully alive to the needs of the residents.
