Gibbon, Chief of the General Staff, left for Christchurch last night. He returns to Wellington to-morrow. Mr. Ivor Lynch, of the Napier branch of the Union Bank of Australia, has been notified of his transfer to.lnvercargill. . Mr. M'Cartney, of Napier, waft prior to his departure for Wanganui presented by the Napier Swimming Club with a .case of pipes and a travelling rug, while the Napier branch of. the Royal Life Saving Society gave him a solid leather portmanteau. _ Mr. M'Cartney has taken".a very active part in all matters connected with swimming. Mr. H. G. Ell, M.P., Christchurch, is on a visit to Napier. Messrs. H.. Plimmer and Winter Hall and the members of their Patriotic Comedy Company leave Sydney for Wellington direct 'to-day. The season' does not commence until Saturday, March 20. Colonel T. W. Porter left for Palmerston North yesterday to 'assist in the organisation of a branch of the National Reserve. The meeting has been called by the Mayor of Palmerston (Mr. J. Al Nash). Colonel_ Porter will afterwards visit Wanganui, New Plymouth, Shannon, and Levin for a similar purpose. , ■ It is understood that Mr. Francis Bennett, headmaster or the Karori School, nas been appointed headmaster of the new school at Brittomart Street, and that Miss Holm, of the Mount Cook Girls' Staff, has been appointed first assistant.

A presentation, has-been made to Mr. R. Semple, . who has resigned hie position of organiser for the United Federation of Labour, and is leaving for the South Island. Those present included Messrs. J. Rigg (chairman), P. Fraser, J. Glover, M. Laracy (Shearers' Union), J. Noct (Tramways Union), Waterworth (Tailors' Union), Cornwall (Painters' Union), L. M. A. Rearden, John Roid (secretary, United Federation of Labour), and P. J. O'Regan. In making the presentation, which -was subscribed for by various labour unions and private individuals, the chairman said_ that, although he had not agreed with all Mr. Semple had done, there was no doubt'as to his outstanding ability and his sincerity in the cause of the Labour movement. After a toast to'the recipient had been drunk, Mr. O'Regan proposed ''The Labour Movement," which was also honoured.
