CROWN LAND BALLOT

NUMEROUS APPLICANTS. The ordinary meeting of tho Wellington Land Board opened yesterday morning. Mr. T. N. Brodrick, Commissioner of Crown Lands, presided, and thero were also present Messrs. Jos. Dawson, H. T. Ellingham, Jas. Georgetti, and Chas. il'lntyre. A ballot for three sections in the Puketoi Survey District (Akitio County) and four seotions in the Mount Cerebus Survey District Akitio County) was set down to take placo at 2.30 p.m. For these sections 181 separate persons filed 534 applications, and the board was occupied all day in examining applicants, and deciding as to preference. The ballot did not take place until 4,45 p.m., and the 'ordinary business of the board 'was held over until to-day. ,

In the ballot preference was given to married people with children dependent on them, and to people- who had twice applied unsuccessfully within the last two years. The ballot resulted:— Three sections* Akitio County, Puketoi S.D., situated on the Utewai and MakuriAohanga Roads; access from Pahiatua, via Maku'ri. The distance 'to Sections 20 and 32 is twenty-sis and twenty-seven miles respectively, by metalled road all the way. The distance to Section 25 is twenty-nine miles, all of which, excepting a mile and a half, is by metalled road. Hilly land, covered with bush. A small area on Section 20 has been grassed. Soil is of fair to good quality, on clay and papa formation. The forest is heavy, and comprises rata, rimu, kahikatea, hinau, etc., with usual undergrowth. Watered by permanent streams. Elevation from 800 ft. to 1500 ft. above sealevel.

Access from Pahiatua about forty miles distant— thirty-six miles by formed and metalled road, two miles and a half by formed road, and a mile and a half surveyed road unformed. Another means of access is from the 60uth by the MakuriPongaroa Road, etc. Hilly land, covered with bush. Soil of good quality, on limestone and papa formation. About 20 acres of Section 58 felled and grassed. The forest is fairly heavy, and comprises rata, tawa, rimu, hinau,. etc., with usual undergrowth. Well watered by permanent streams. Elevation from 700 ft. to 1850 ft. above sea-level. Section SG, Blook I: Area, 245 acres. Cash purchase: Total price, ,£560. Occupation with right of purchase; halfyearly rent, .£l4.
