WANGANUI AUTUMN MEETING CUP WON BY MASTER LUPIN. LADOGA SCORES IN STEWARDS' HANDICAP. CBy Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, February 25. _ The Wanganui Jockey Club's Autumn Mooting opened to-day in beautiful weather. Tho attendance was bigger than usual. Tho totalizator handled .£27,166 10s., as against X2G,907 for the corresponding day Inst year. Tho wliolo of tho ten acceptors lined up for the Stewards' Handicap. Fair Rosamond was a good favourite, and she jumped out well, out after having every chanco sho failed to get in the first three. Astor was first out, and led Banksia, 'l'o llou Hon, Princess Moutoa, CrawfoTd, and the favourite till tho three-furlong post, where Ladoga mado a forward move. Astor shook off all but Ladoga by the time tho distance was Toacliou, but tho Trentham horse finished too strongly, and beat Astor by a. half-longth. Crawford was well cloar of Fair Rosamond and Banksia,. who wero the next to finish. Goldstreani and Marimba wero backed in that order for the Petrio Hack Handicap, but tho pair failed to pay a dividend. At tho start Marimba jumped out well, and led from Bivouac and a 6trungout field. .Avon Park became prominent around the bond. In' tho straight she took charge and after stalling off a strong challango by Now York sho won by a length, with Marimba, Fortify and Goldstream in that order.
Styrax and Flingot were the best supported on tho machine in tho Open Hurdles, for which The Rover and_ Tirohanga were withdrawn. Leapuki went out in front and, jumping beautifully, he soon got a commanding lead. Flingot and Styrax raced into the next positions after a mile had been covered, but the lat-, ter was galloping sour, and Flingot cut out 'the fence at tho five furlongs. Leapuki tired badly over the last half-mile, and the trio raced at tho last fence together. Styrax jupipod it best, and won nicely, witn Flingot a neck in front of Leapuki. The others were beaten off. . Naupata was a slightly better favourite than Tirohanga in tho Hack Hurdles. A very 6low pace was set, and this was right into tho hands of the top-weight, who took charge rounding tho bend and won comfortably. Naupata struggled on well, and got second placo from St. Gate, but Tirohanga, who looked very light, was beaten off. An extraordinary feature of the Cup wa q that the horses were backed in tho order they appeared iu the correct card. Indigo, who stripped well, was made a good favourite, but the publio went oft' Rinaldo on account of his burly appearance. Tho 6tart was a good one, and with two furlongs gono Moutoa Girl led Goldsize and Master Lupin, with Rewi Poto'and Marshal M"Donald in the Tear. Rounding the bend the order was Moutoa Girl, Master Lupin, Chaminade, and Goldsize. With a mile to go Master Lupin was" a nock in front of Moutoa Girl, with Chaminade and Goldsize just clear of Rinaldo. At the six-furlongs Master Lupin put a break on the field, and going down tho back he was well out from Chaminade. At th.e half mile the lightweight was six lengths clear of the Test of "the field, who wcro led by Rinaldo, with Indigo and Kilrain next. The issue was now beyond doubt, and rounding tho bend the positions were unchanged. Holding his own, Master Lupin won by three lengths from Rinaldo, with Kilrain several lengths away just clear of Indigo. Marshal MDonald and Moutoa Girl were tho next to finish. Tho first six furlongs were run undeT lmin. ISseo., and the mile in lmin. 42 3-sseo. The winner received a great reception on returning to scale. His owner has given 10 per cent, of the stake to the Belgian Food Fund. The riders in the Juvenile Handicap were very raw, and tho start took some time to effect. Tirana jumped out well, and led from Black Heart and Bisogno. Black Heart joined Tirana at the stand, but the Hawera torse held his own and won by a good head,. with Eligible two lengths away. Austin and Quo Vadis were evenly backed in • the Wiritoa Hack Handicap, and they finished in the places. The former was a head to the good, but Quo Vadis got a bad run over the first part, and was stopped at the five-furlongs post. Sylvandale made the running for six furlongs, when Austin took cnarge, but in the run home he was all out to defeat Quo Vadis. Patronymic ran a good race, and got third place, just clear of Draft and Mahlstick, who were promiment behind Sylvandale. In the early stages of the race Silver Flood broke his fetlock, at the turn for homo, and his rider had to pull'up and dismount. Several of the runners in the Flying Handicap were well supported. At the jump-away Grrattan, on the extreme oatside, was the first to become prominent, and he and Chakwana led a bunched field to the turn, where Postillion, Ardent, Belasco, Tree Lucerne, and Emperador were all prominent. Tree Lucerne was in front at the distance, and, holding Postillion and Emperador, he won by a length.
