PERAMBULATIONS OF A CAT

A private in the Hon. Artillery Company s Infantry Regiment tells a humorous incident. He writes: "The first time we manned xhe front trenches, we had just got in—it was, of course, pitch dark —and we were peering cautiously about to see where we were. Thero were a few weird noises and strange lights going on, and I moved towards our corporal to ask him somotliing, when suddenly a wild, unearthly wail went up, apparently at my very feet. My blood ran cold, and 1 grasped him by the hand. 'Heavens,' I cried, 'what was that! 11 'You're standing on a cat, I think I' he replied. And, indeed, J was I What it was doing there i don't know, but it remained with us off and on all day. Later on that day, when it was dark again, there was a German attack on our left. We were ordered to man our trenches', and then suddenly the order came along, 'Sights at zero, and fire low ' We waited, quivering with excitement, when suddenly [ saw something feeling its way cautiously over the trench in front of m«.
