ON BETHUNE-LA BASSEE ROAD ENEMY REPULSED WITH LOSS By TeleEraph—Frees Association-Oopyrlght Paris, February 1. 'A communique states: : "There are lively artillery duels on most of the front." (Rec. February 2, 9.5 p.m.) Paris, February 2. Official.—"There has been a very heavy fall of snow.' The Germans on the morning of February 1 violently assaul bed our trenches north of the BethuneLa Bassee Road, but were repulsed, leaving numerous dead. "The German infantry at Beaumonthamel, north of Albert (on the AmiensArras line), attempted a surprise, but ware forced to fly, abandoning explosives. "There is great activity at Fontaine Maideme and Bob de Lagrurie (ill the Argonno district). A German attack was repulsed towards Bagatelle."The High Commissioner reports, under date London, February 1, 6.55 p.m.: "Paris reports that yesterday the artillery duel was particularly lively in the whole of the northern region. South-east of Ypres a German infantry attack on the trenches north of the' canal was stopped by combined artillery and infantry fire. On the whole of the Aisno front the batteries demolished the enemy's trenches. The construction of machine-gun shelters has strengthened tbe line in the Champagne district north-cast of Mesnil-les-Hurles, and we have strengthened our organisation in a tin all wood captured on Saturday. The Argonne is calm; the enemy appears to have suffered severely in the rccent D ' London, February 2, 4.30 a.m. "Paris reports that the enemy waß violently attacking the Frenches north of the La Bassee-Bethnne Road on Monday, but were repulsed with heavy losses. German infantry attempting to surprise a trench at Baumonthamel were put to flight. There is great activity in the Fontaine Maideme and Bois de la Grurie Forest region. The enemy's attack in the direction of Bagatelle was repulsed."
