ENEMY REPULSED WITH LOSS
I RUSSIANS' NEW MOVE IN EAST PRUSSIA There is >ery scant news.from the theatres of war to-day. Further particulars oi the sinking of the New Zealand steamer Tokomaru are to hand, and show that the attack was delivered without warning to those on board. There are sensational, but unconfirmed, reports of a fleet of five airships having appeared on the South Coast of England, and being driven off by the fire from the forts. In the FrancoBelgian theatre there have been no events of outstanding interest. There was a sharp fight with the enemy north of the La Bassee-Bethune Road, the Germans being repulsed with loss. Artillery fighting is proceeding along the whole front, and considerable damage has heon inflicted on the enemy's trenches. In the Eastern theatre the Russians have a veil over the campaign in Central Poland. The advance in the Carpathians is being maintained, while in East Prussia an important outflanking movement is reported to have been initiated by the Russians, with a view to out-manoouvring the German tactics in the Masurian Lakes, and diverting some of the enemy's attention from Poland, Galicia, and the Western theatre. The entry of Italy into the war arena is interestingly discussed by the Italian newspaper "Oceania" (published in Sydney), which asserts that it has high authority for its statements. A pitiful cry comes from Servia, where the civil population are literally starving from cold and hunger.
