•After a hellish' fire from 270 British guns for forty-five minutes the Gordons charged through a hail of machine-gun and riflo fire. Tho men dropped in heaps, but tho tartans kept on tho bloody struggle, and iron tho first .German trenches. . When tho Gordons mustered in a dip: within twenty yards of the main German position it was found that 55 per cent, had fallen. Tho Gordons retreated, carrying tho wounded, but Field-Marshal Sir John French, and two generals, who witnessed tho storming, said: "The Gordons had made history, and had accomplished more than'was expected."
