CAIRO REPORTS UNDOUBTED ADVANCE MUST ENCOUNTER LAND AND SEA ATTACKS London, January 17. Cairo states that the Turks are undoubtedly in force. The general opinion is they -will never reach the Suez Canal. —"Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services. (Rec. January 18, 5 p.m.) ■ "The Times's" military correspondent, says that if-the seventy thousand Turks -who are reported to bo massing in-Syria cross the Desert they, will meet with a warm reception. "The.Navy can also take a leading share in the operations, not only in the Suez Canal, but off El Arish (a Mediterranean port about 100 miles east of Port Said) and Akaba (at the head of> the Gulf of Akaba, in the Red Sea). We ought to have all the trumps in our hands when playing this rubber', but we must not forget thai the Turks fight with courage. They are a military people with great traditions, who must not be despissd."INVADERS' ARMY UNDER CRITICISM GERMAN OFFICERS DISPLAY RELUCTANCE. ■ Cairo, January 18. ' The Press Bureau has issued a communique based on statements by refugees. It describes the German-Turkish army which proposes to invade Egypt as likely, to display bravery, but incapacity. _ Many are starving, owing to bad organisation, rather than to lack of supplies. There are not sufficient horses and camels, and many of the camels are dying. The troops are ill-clothed —in summer khaki. • The German officers have reported to Berlin that they are unable to advise an attack on Egypt with such troops; and have suggested a postponement. The Germans, however, have been ordered to march, though as one officer describes it, it will be marching to certain death. v. Refugees' state that feeling between Turkish and German officers h bad. The latter fear that if they do not succeed in crossing the Canal the Turks will turn and attack them; TURKISH ADVANCE 'INTO PERSIA. London, January 16. Petrograd reports that the Turks are gradually advancing in the interior of Persia. The people are helpless and unable to resist.—"Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services. Official. —"The battle of Kara Urgan lasted three days, in an endless snowstorm, and ended in a complete Russian victory. The Turkish rearguard was annihilated. "The remnants of the army,_ harried on the flanks and front, are flceuig to Erzerum. The Russian pursuit is being pressed. Fugitives who were unable to carry their guns flung them from the heights."
