THE TURF.

NOTES AND COMMENTS

IBr GIINCOB.I

Most of the .Cup horses are now at Trentham,' and several of them were galloped on the trial grass on Saturday morning. The going was very fast, and a good crowd of spectators.were pTeseht. .Indigo, who' bears a well-seasoned appearance, had his stable companion Alces to assist him over.seven furlongs. He easily defeated her, and could have done much better than the time registered, viz., lmin. 31Jsec. Ladoga (F. Porter) gave a lofi of weight to Kilrairi (A. Reed) and beat him badly over seven furlongs. The former, who went extra well, ran home in lmin. .30 2-ssec. The gallop was a good-one, and if the Sir Laddo gelding runs kindly for Porter he is likely to be a hard horse for Indigo to .dispose of. , Pavlova (C. Emerson) ran a mile unassisted in lmin. 44seo. Considering that the mare went by herself, no fault oould.be found with nor effort. A lot of fast work .was done by the sprinters, many of whom registered exceptionally .fast gallops, but as. the going materially assisted time-making, little notice need 'boVtaken :of the efforts.. Yesterday morning the southern trainers, R. o'Don'nell,,M:'.Hobbß, and H. Cutts, arrived'-at Trentham with their teams. S. Waddell, : G. Price, and A. Shearsby are due to-day, and this will make the whole" of "the i Jockeys M...M'Donaldj-F. Porter, S. 'Reid, W.; O'Hallorah/ J; Beale, A. Reed, 'L. j Wilson, arid. ; J.': Campbell are ; now at Trentham, and'.have been assisting with ■ the. work, during ; the -last few mornings. : ..A. J. M'Flynn, B. Deeley, : and J. Buchanan are due to arrive by the Auckland express.to-day. The firsknamed will ride' Crown Pearl; Deeley will be on Byron and and Buchanan will ride Merry Roe. .. Discussing the''gallops done at Trentham on- Saturday, one well-known trainer remarked that 1 better work had never been done on'the Trentham.tracks prior to a Cup meeting. Included amongst the recruits at present in'oamp.at,Trentham are the hurdle horsemen, A. M'Connon, F. Seccombe, G. Lee, Wallace Young, and W. Rice. The.£2s fine imposed upon W. Bell by the Manawatu stewards has been confirmed by the . District Committee- at Wanganui. Mr. J. F. Reid, the Burnside Btudmaster, sustained a very severe loss on Friday by the death of his stallion Rokeby,'by Rock"Sand—Aida. The Ehg-Jish-bred. horse was inuwrted by his owner in 1912, and theTirst of his yearlings to come into the market were sold in .Chriatohurch in- November last, When three of them brought a total of 1080 guineas, an average'of 360 guineas. Rokeby's stock then created a very favourable impression,, and this season's foals are spoken of as a very fine lot indeed. Rock Sand, the sire of Rokeby, also sired Tracery/who won the Doncaster St. Leger in 1912, and as a four-year-old wa» regarded as perhaps the best horse in>England.. Tracery's deeds broughtt Rook Sand into great promin. ence, and it ! was considered fortunate for New Zealand breeders that there was a,son of-Rock. Sand.at the stud in the Dominion. ; Rokeby- was quite a young horse, having been foaled in 1907,.and his early, death is s a matter for regret.
