AMERICAN OPINION
HOW IT IS INFLUENCED. The following letter from a New York journalist, American-born,. to a friend m England is interesting as showing the efforts'the Germans are making to capture the support of the Amoncan people:— You English truly ought to do something to stem the tide' of German sympathy that iB being artificially set _in motion here. To begin with, and fundamentally, public opinion was with the Allies. It still is among the people of higher education, wider knowledge, and broader experience—with all those who have travelled imioh especially. And. the newspapers are almost a unit against Germany. ; But the campaign that is being conducted' by Bornstorff, Dernburg, and their gang is bringing results. You have no idea with what thoroughness they aro. working among all classes of people. In every crowd before a bulletin you will see day after day three or four Germans haranguing the ill-in-formed persons who frequent 6uch sources of information. German agents are everywhere. The newspapers are filled with their letters to editors, articles, and what not; and. the newspapers are not as aggressive in their demtnciation of Germany as they were. I know it is your d-~d English attitude not to bother about other people e opinion of you. I scarcely know which is worse, Prussian'insolence or English contempt. < But really you cannot afford to let Germany poison the public mind of the only great country that is neu-. tral and upon which England is going to depend more than your average Briton may imagine. , You are going to ,nnd the only open court packed for Germany unless you take steps to check this .nefarious' programme.
