BOWLS

TWO FEET OR ONE ON THE MAT? At a meeting of the Wellington Bowling Centre, held in the Wellington Club's, pavilion on Monday evening, the muohdebated two-feet-oa-the-mat rule was' disoussed at some length. The secretary (Mr.'J. J Roberts) explained that the centre's executive had approved the new rule, and had asked the clubs to call meetings to express their opinions.. Mr. G. Snaddon.and Mr, P.- Evans (president and secretary of the Victoria Club) said they had been instructed to vote in favour-of the n0?...ru10. Mr. Allport (Hutt) moved, and Mr. ' Bennett (Karori) seconded,' "That, in the opinion of this centre, the rule requiring two feet on the mat is not conducive to the' welfare of bowling in this Dominion, and that the rule, therefore, be rescinded, and the old rule reverted to, with the proviso that the whole of the back foot must bo on the mat, failing whioh a penalty of removing the bowl should be enforced." After a long discussion Mr. Shallcraas (Te Hiwi) moved as an amendment, and Mr. Keith (Victoria) seconded, "That the meeting, should adjourn to December 21, to allow all'delegates to be. instructed by their clubs how to vote." ".This was lost. . Mr. Snaddon pointed out that the whole meeting was a waste of time. The rule had been laid down by the council) and,. for this year, it could not be altered. The clubs must adhere to it. In his opinion the rule was a good one. Mr. Allport's motion was .then put, and lost by 15. votes to 13. The clubs voting against it (in favour of the rule) were: Hataitai, Kelburn, Khandallah, Lyall Bayy Te Hiwi, Thorndon, Victoria (two delegates); those for it (one foot), Hutt, Jonhsonville, Karori, Newtown, Viotoria (one delegate), and Wellington. Eastbourne, Otaki, Petone, Soatoun, and Upper Hutt were not represented.
