SOME CONCERN IN CONGRESS. (Rec. December 6 5 8.45 p.m.) , Washington, December 5. The condition, of the United. States defences is now agitating the Press and politicians. Tivo members of the House of Representatives, Messrs. Fitzgerald and Sherley, conferred with President Wilson on the question, expressing their belief that Senator Gardner's allegation that the defences of New York were inadequate was untrue. Competent army officers believed that New York's defences were able to destroy any attacking fleet. Major Alesbire informed the House Military Cohimittee that the army was' fully supplied for six months, but the militia was not yet fully equipped. v i PRESS EXPRESSES ALARM. .{Rec. December 6, 0.40 p.m.) Washington, December 5. Brigadier General Weaver, in his evidence before the House Military Committee, said that ten thousand more men were needed to make the coast defences efficient. The coast guns were I obsolete, having been built in 1890, and were incapable of 'resisting the siege guns at present in use in Europe. The artillery troops were deficient owing to numerous drafts being necessary for the Philippines, Costa Rica, and elsewhere. The American Press professes great alarm at the condition of the land forces, and many newspapers doußt whether the country would bo able to put more than one division in the field if war broke out to-morrow. Mr. Roosevelt- is quoted as recently stating that New York was at the mercy of any foreign foe. , Senator Gardner wishes to lave a National Security Board formed, consisting of naval and military experts.
