HUTT AND PETONE NEWS
(From Our Own Correspondent,) At Lower Hutt, the Mayor (Mr. J. Baldwin) presided at a meeting of ladies on Monday evening, called for the purpose of assisting in the Belgian Christmas Gift Fund.. Mr. J. F. Atkin explained that the object was to raise funds by means of shilling subscriptions for providing Christmas gifts to the Belgians. All the ladies present offer, ed to assist, and cards were distributed for the purpose of collecting. A similar meeting was held in Petone last evening, the Mayor (Mr. J. . W. M'Ewan) presiding, and the scheme was adopted by the ladies present. It is hoped by the promoters of the movement to raise £25,000 in New Zealand. The Mayor oi Petone (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) has received a letter from some school children, in which it is stated that as the result of a juvenile bazaar in aid of the Belgian Christmas Gift Fund, the sum of £4 3s. had beeii collected, and asking the acceptance of the money, to be added to Pete lie's contribution. The letter \csis signed by Florrie Chesterman, Delia Oakley, Ruva -Barber, Jean Commctti, Marjory Carter, and Ursula Stanford. A novel method of assisting the Belgian Relief Fund has been adopted by Mrs. R. W. Short, of Petone. The residents of a street are asked to donate, or, in certain cases, to manufacture some article, which is to be sold at an "at home" to bo given by Mrs. Short on Saturday week.
