SHOULD PARTY COUNT BEFORE LOYALTY TO THE PRINCIPLE OF THE REFERENDUM ON THE SIBLE-IN-SCHOOLS QUESTION 7
An emphatic answer is given/'by Bishop Julius, -of Christehurch,, who, speaking at a- meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Mothers' Union, urged tho necessity of putting; tho Bible-in-schools question ahead of other considerations. They were told he said, that it was very wrong, very unpatriotic, and goodness knows ' what else besides, to take one particular tiling and put it in front; and that they ought to put party in front. He did not ask mothers to vote for a man who ought not,to be in Parliament—a man of bad character—not even if he supported Bible-in-6chools. But when it came to a question not of character but of party, then it was his opinion that New Zealand would not como to gutter grief during the next twelve months, whot-he'r she had the Reform or the Opnosition Party'at the head, but it would make a very great difference indeed wlic-. ther or not religious instruction was given in the schools. (Applause.) That was a question not for one year, but for generations to come.—[Published.by arrangement.] ' .
