THE LIQUOR QUESTION

PROHIBITIONISTS AND MODERATES. • , Attention is called to a further advertisement of the New Zealand Moderate League appearing of page 7 of this issue, in which certain questions are asked of those promoting the meeting to be hold in the Town Hall on Friday oroning next. Tho league have also sent tho following letter to his Worship the Mayor:— . . .

Sir, —I beg to/advise you that the executive of this leaguo, gathers from aii advertisement .(in tho Press) iuid from circulars distributed on Sunday last that you are to preside, in your official capacity as Mayor of Wellington, at a meeting called for tho.purpose apparently of an attack by one section of the citizens upon the notion of another section, which, judging from tho tone of the advertisements, is likely to tm of an acrimonious character. ■

Tho league protests against the Ch'ief Magistrate of the City appearing in such a role, but in any caso we suggest that you should make 6uch arrangements as will provide the executive of the body to be attacked with such accommodation as shall be necessary for its representation at tho meeting by reserving half a dozen seats on the platform. Trusting that- you will see that this courtesy is extended to tho league.—l have the honour to be, Sir, your obedient servant, (Signed) A. A. S. Menteath, president.

A copy of Mr. J'Juko's' letter in reply to the abovo reads:—Mr. A. A. S. Men* tenth, —Sir, I dosiro to thank you for your letter of even date ,and note tho protest of your league in regard to my action in consenting to tako tho chair for t))o proposed meeting to tako placo on Friday evening next. I do.not share tho opinion of yourself and your league that I am appearing in n iole inconsistent with tlio office of Chief Magistrate. , In regard to jour request for seats on the platform, I havo nothing to do \yjth the organising of the mooting. 1 would suggest that you write to the secretary of the No-Liccues Leaguo.—Yours faith-
