'A' correspondent from New York Bays that the Germans' silence as to the whereabouts of the cruisers Leipzig and Bremen makes l the United States naval authorities believe that onlj part of the story of the sea fight off Valparaiso has been told, and that it will probably -be found that the Gorman losses were heavier than has been indicated. . The German third-class cruiser Bremen,_ completed in. 1904, is of 32Q0 tons displacement, carries ten 4.1-in. guns in her primary armament, and steams 23 knots. The Leipzig is of the same class as ; regards tonnage, armament and speed, but was completed two years later. . ■ / PENDING BATTLE IN THE PACIFIC. (Reo. November 9, 9 p.m.) Toklo, November 8. It is reported that the Japanese 'Admiralty has received information that a battle is pending between tne Japanese ana German fleets in the Pacific, but the locality of the engagement is not indicated. GUNBOAT GEIER INTERNED AT HONOLULU. ("Times" end Sydney ."Sun". Services.) . 0 Washington, November 8. The German gunboat Geier and the Norddeut'scher Lloyd steamer Looksum have been interned here for the duration of the war, and placed under a guard of United States troops. The German gunboat Geier recently _ arrived at Honolulu after having been chased by a British oruiser, and has since been lying in that port refilling and overhauling. • >' HOW THE RAIDER EMDEN' WORKED. v Perth, Novembor 9. • The steamer Paroo, from Singapore, reports that a British' cruiser sighted the Emden near Penarig, on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula, coaling from two storeships. ' The Emden.bolted and the cruiser sank one of the Btoreships and captured the other,a Greek collier, with a German naval reserve lieutenant aboard. Replying to a suggestion that the Emden's successful raids wore due* to, someone aboard acquainted with the Eastern trade routes, the lieutenant de„clared, "I am the man." ■. ■' "SUNKEN" MERCHANTMAN ARRIVES IN PORT. (Rec, November 10, 0.15 a.m.) Valparaiso, November 8. The steamer Vine Branch, previously reported to have been sunk by the German cruiser Leipzig off the west coast of South■ America, !has arrived here. LONG ORuJsE ON AN ARMED MERCHANTMAN. (Rec. November 10, 1.5 a.m.) • ; London,' November 9. Mr. .Shoppard, of Goadloing, a passenger by the Zietan, who has landed at Liverpool, reports that when about two days from Aden they found themselves going east and inquired the reason. They were told that owing to European complications they were going to Sokotra. Martial law was proclaimed on board and all were compelled to obey the orders of German sailors from New Guinea. The lights were put out. After dark the Konigsberg-conveyed the Zietan and the City of Winchester to Sokotra, then to the Persian Gulf, whore the Konigsberg stripped' the City of Winchester, of her orew, cargo of coal, fittings and everything movable, and transferred them to the Zietan. Afterwards the Konigsberg sank the City of Winchester while the Zietan. for the purpose of coaling, entered Mozambique, flying the British flag. The passengers were kept below for two hours previously to the arrival of the steamer.at Beira. They brought them to Santime, Madeira, and to • Lisbon, transhipping them there to England.
