HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) , A meeting of the Hutt River Board was held last evening, there being present: —Messrs. H. Baldwin (chairman), Knight, Bowers, and Welch. The overseer's report ■ stated that all the Roi'so had been burnt off the stopfences had been repaired, and all culverts and out-fall drains cleared, and placed 'in good order. At -Mason's Gardens several blue-gum trees had been felled, and 65 serviceable posts had been split from the logs as a result. Booms had been' distributed at Hooper's and the Hutt Bridge, and were ready to erect. The river had been threatening recently,' the worst places being at Mason's Gardens, Mrs. Johnston's, Messrs. Andrews's, Welch's and Hooper's. The water had been low all the month, and the plantations wore all in good growth.
A successful' social was held at the Alicetown Congregational Church last evening, the Rev. J. G. Gibson presiding.' Items were contributed by Mrs.: Rising, Miss G. Sheldrake, Rev. Gibson, arid Messrs. Heron, Mason, Black, and Perry. The team from the Lower Hutt District High School tliat- won the "Weekly Press" Challenge Shield for 1 the Junior Cadet Corps last year was asfollows: —Col.-Sergt. S. Wilson, Sergt. A. Clifford, Lance-Coip. J. Fake, Privates F; Chapman, R. Lusty, A. Odium, W. Adams, H. Jenncr, 13. Swaysland, and E. Olivecrona.
The Petono Defence Rifle Clnb will fire a practice match on Saturday on •their range, Waiwntu. Distances— !KW. "HO, .and GOO yards; seven shots ,at saofe.
