The cashbox had been broken open on June 11 and again on October 25, and on each occasionthe money was taken. Before removing the machine, the Department wished to know if the council could exercise any supervision over it.: • The Mayor pointed; out that the removal of tho telephone would be a serious inconvenience to the Miramar people. It was a pjty the offenders could not be caught, but sooner than have the telephone taken-away lie would himself make good the loss incurred by the Department'.' ; Councillor Stone said that the box was a flimsy one,, and if a stronger box was . installed it might prevent thefts. The council could bear the cost'of alteration. He moved'that the matter bo referred to the Mayor and the engineer to deal with. He further suggested that the slot telephone should be put under a, shop verandah, where it >ould be under observation;! The motion-to leave the matter in the hands of the : Mayor and the engineer was seconded,by Councillor' Smith and carried unanimously./ , ' It was then, suggested that the' time was opportune to request that a police constable be appointed. to Miramar, and on the motion of Councillor Hawthorne it was'decided to make applipation to the Minister of Justice for a constable to be stationed in the borough; The Ma.for reported'thai the Government had dropped the Hutt Road Billj and the position thereby created was satisfactorv to the council. The report of the power station enginever stated that 'affairs were beginning to assume a satisfactory condition at the station.. The water cooler,hiid been repaired and had resumed running on Oct-ober 17. The consumption of water during tlie mohtli amounted to 97,120 gallons. The report was adopted.
