He is tho eldest son of Prince Alex.awler of Hesse; he married, in 1884, his cousin Princess Victoria, daughter of Princess Alice, ' Queen Victoria's daughter, and has two sons and. two daughters. He was naturalised a British subject, and entered tho Royal Navy as a naval cadet in 1868; became sub-lieutenant in 1874; -Lieutenant, 1876; Commander, 1885; Captain, 1891. He served in'the Egyptian War; Director of Naval Intelligence, 1902-1904; Rear-Admiral, 1904; Commanding Sec- \ ond Cruiser Squadron,, 1904-6; Second in Command Mediterranean, 1906-8; Commander-in-Chief Atlantic, 190S-10; Commanding 3rd and 4th Divisions Home Fleet, 1911; Second Sea Lord of the Admiralty, 1911.
