" , FIGHTING -NEAR OSTEND. , London, October 19. •Tie "Daily Mail" states that the passage'of Mho Germans' eastwards from Ostend ceased on Monday afternoon, when fighting began between them and the Allies. An eye-witness states that many Germans were killed or wounded.

THE GERMAN REPULSE AT ST. MIHIEL. ' Paris, October 19. Details of tho engagement at St. Mihiel on October. 3 show that a battery of mountain guns on mules, and a battalion of. Territorials with searchlights, advanced at night through forests, guided by foresters, and encountered the German outposts two miles from a bridge. The Territorials surprised the camp, and the searchlights lit up the bridge, which the guns destroyed. Many Germans were bayoneted, and many'drowned in- the river.
ATTACK ON BELFORT BEGUN, ' (Rec. October 20, 10.20 p.m.) Amsterdam, October 19. The "Cologne Gazette" states that heavy Krupp siege-guns have been '■ placed to the east of Belfort where there was severe fighting during the last few days with only slight advantage to the Germans.. Belfort is the southernmost of the four French fortresses facing the' Franco-Gorman frontier and guards the pass through to Mulbausen in Upper Alsace. The fortress successfully resisted all attacks during the war of 1870.
' ALLIES ADVANCE AROUND LILLE. / (Reo. October 20, 10.20 p.m.) Paris, October 19. Official. —The enemy's heavy artillery bombarded the Allies' front at Nieuport. Tho Allies, and particularly tho Belgians, repulsed the Germans' renewed attacks and advanced to Roulers. We progressed on the Left between the Lys and la Bassee in the direction of Lille. After stubborn fighting at la Bassee we advanced slightly. The Allies about Arras, after fighting desperately for ten. days, repulsed strong counter-attacks, and also gained ground ,afc Chaulnes.* There is nothing to report from the Centre. On the Right our advanced posts are on the line of Bonhomme-Baires-Bulgeiu, , and we still hold the positions.
Roulers is in Bplgium and is about 20 miles south-east of Ostend and a similar distance north of Lille. . _ La Bassee is 13 miles south-west of Lille and' is about 8 miles south-east of the nearest point on the course of the River Lys, whioh flows to the northeast past Lille and on to Ghent. The pass of Bonhommo is in the Vosges on the frontier between St. Die and Colcnar.
ALLIES RETAKE OSTEND,

London, October 20. The "Morning Post" states that the Allies have retaken Ostend. The Belgian Army is actively remobilising.
BRITISH GENERAL KILLED BY A SHELL.

Major-General Hubert Hamilton was standing with a group of officers, under cover, when a shell burst a hundred yards away, and a bullet struck General Hamilton on the temple and killed him. No 0110 else was touched. The shelllire throughout tho day prevented the removal of the body, but at dusk it was carried to a litfclo church and buried. Aa the body readied tho church the attack recommenced' violently, tho chaplain's voice was inaudible,' and the flashes of the guns lit up the building, tvhicli was in darkness save for a tiny torch by which the service was read. The late Majm'-f/cnoi-pl Hilbert lon Wetherall Hamilton, C.8., D.5.0., M.V.0., was one of Lord Kitchener's right-hand men. Expedition six yoars later, and in the 1 a tor 'nineties took part in the Eygjptian campaign, including the battles of Atbara and Khartum, and was mentioned in dispatches three times. In the South African AVar he was first D.A.A.G, and A.A.G. at Army Headquarters, and afterwards .military secretary to General Lord Kitchener when lie became Commander-in-Chief in South_ Africa. In 1902, when Lord Kitchener went to India as Commander-in-Chief, General Hamilton accompanied him as military _ secretary. On his return he was appointed to the command of the 7th Brigade, and two years later was MajorGeneral on tho General Staff of the Mediterranean Command. Prom 1911 until the outbreak of the war, the late General Hamilton commanded the North Midland Division. ■
GERMANS POURING SOUTH FROM ANTWERP,
(Rcc. October 21, 1.20 a.m.) Antwerp, October 20. One-half of the German marines and bluejackets' in Antwerp have started for Ostend. German infantry, cavalry, and artillery are steadily pouring through Wetteren and Termonde, going towards France. The cavalry is described as consisting of pale, thin pays of eighteen or middle-aged men of the Landwehr. Heavy guns are being taken from Antwerp to Termonde,
Termonde is on the Scheldt, 17 miles south-west of Antwerp. Wetteren is 10 miles west of Termonde and 7 miles south-east of Ghent.
SLIGHT ADVANCE BETWEEN ARRAS AND ROYE,
(Reo. October 21, 1.20 a.m.)
Paris, October 20, morning. Official.—The Allies have made a slight advance between Arras and Roye where they have reached the enemy's wire entanglements. We have also gained ground on the right bank of the Meuso and the environs of St. Mihiel.
