"REST AN' BE THANFU'"
HANDSOME BEQUEST TO THE CITY Messrs. Young and Tripe, solicitors for the trustees of the late Mr. John Nowton, have notified'the City Council of a handsome bequest to Wellington by the late Mr. Nowton, who set asido a sum of money to be spent on thefok lowing, conditions:—"For the construction and obtaining of 250 seats rhado o? vrood and iron of such design as the Trustees may select, and of such size as may be necessary for the comfortable seating of six adult persons." Upon each seat provision is to be made for the casting in iron of the words "Rest an' bo thankfu , , N." The seats were to be offered wholly to tlio corporation of the City of Wellington, or partly: to tlie City and partly to such other corporation or local body as may have its boundary adjoining the boundaries of the city. The Trustees have absolute power of selection, but prior to making any selection it is a condition precedent that the corporation or local body to whom tho seats are given will undertake to keep them m good order arid repair. Tho Trustees hnvo carefully considered the matter of the gift and havo come to the ronolusion that the following would be a fair division of the number of seats bequeathed, namely, Wellington Corporation 160, Onslow 80, Karori 20, Miramar 80, Day's Bay Park 10. At ]ast_ night's meeting of tho City Council, it was decided to accept tho gift to the city and to send a letter of thanks to tho trustees and also a letter to Mr.' A. AY. Nowton. son of tho deceased,, and ono of tho trustees.
