Mr. Robert Dixon, acting-general manager for the National Mutual Life Association, has undergone a serious operation in a private hospital, and is now progressing as favourably as can be expected.

Mr. F. T. Clarke, of Brougham btreet, who met with a motor accident on Tuesday evening on the Hutt Road, is still in a critical condition. Master i\oel Manjbel, who also suffered severe lniunes m • the same accident, is progressing favourably towards recovery.

The death is announced of Mr. Edward Richardson (son of Mr. Reuben Richardson of South i Dunedin). who died from fever whilst engaged in missionary work in British East Africa.

Dr. George M. Chapman, a son of the Hon. Mα-. Justice Chapman, has joined the Royal Army Medical Corps, and gone to the front. Dr. Chapman was recently appointed a house- surgeon at the London Hospital.

Among the passengers from San Francisco by the Maitai yesterday were Captain G. A. Taylor, of Sydney, Major F. B. Stowe, who proceeds to Dunedin, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Harding, of Napier, Dr. J. M. Hope, of Auckland, and Mr. John Cook, of Dunedin.

Mischa.' Elman, the famous violinist, and Mr. Paul Dufault, ,the FrenchCanadian tenor, arrived back in San Francisco from Australia on September 16. On tho same steamer were Mr. R. Kiliani, the late German ConsulGeneral for Australia; Dr. Ferdinand Reyesleben, the late Austrian Consul at Sydney; and Barou L. von Muller, Austrian Ambassador at Tokio.

Mr. J.- Dilworth-Mossman, a former pupil of Auckland Grammar School, was in England when war broke out, and enlisted in- the 2nd King Edward's Horse Regiment, which is composed of colonials or those who have rosided over five years in British oversea possessions.

The death occurred in Waikato Hospital on Wednesday night of Mr. Walter Symes, aged 63, lex-member for Egmont (states a Press Association message from Hamilton). Mr. Symee had , been an .inmate of the hospital for six weeks, suffering from an internal trouble. He was preparing to leavo ten days ago, but had a relapse.

Mr. P. Tombs, conductor of the Hastings Orchestral Society, has been .presented with a handsome fish service by members to mark the occasion of lus marriage. ,

Word has bean received in Napier (says our special correspondent), that Mr. Max lindor, the kineinatogranh artist who went to the front with the French army, was killed early in tho war.

Mr. Harry Stocker, New Plymouth, and Mr. 6. W. Hutchison (Auckland) have been appointed auditors under the Friendly Societies Act.

Messrs. W. J. Carney aad A. E, Barker, wool-buyers, arrived from America, by the Maitai yesterday.
