HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the. Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last ovening, there being present: The Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin) and Councillors Hodgin's, Moldrum, Kempthorne, Brassell, Clendon, Parsonage, Purdy, Ball, and Hobbs. It was resolved, arising from a complaint received by a resident regarding, a nuisance caused by a cowshed, near the Black Creek, that a report on the general conditions of this creek .should be obtained from tho engineer.

Messrs. Inglis Bros, wrote that, owing to the war, the Fire Brigade's motor chassis would not be delivered to contract time,, and would also cost more than had been anticipated. •. They hoped that the council would meet them in the matter. —It was decided that' the council could ,not pay more than the contract price. , The.engineer reported that the kerbing and channelling in Pretoria Street had been done as far as funds would allow. The cost had been:—Labour, £61 7s. 6d.; cement, £16 19s.;,timber, £8 195.; royalty on shingle, 18s.: total, £84 3s. Bd.; amount on estimate £90. The Black Creek had been cleared from King's Road to Knox Church, and then from King's Road to the bowling green. ' As the result of inquiries made along White's Line, onlj> two assurances to uso gas wore obtained, and to connect these would cost about £20. Threo water connections had been made with the mains, making the total to data 978. Two permits had been issued under the Drainage and Sanitary By-Laws, making the total to date 875. It was "decided to grant £20 to the Petone Technical School, and £30 to tho Hutt Park Committee. In the latter connection the Town Clerk asked for power to write off the amount due for rates for five years—£ls3. Councillor Ball thought' the full amount should bo claimed, and criticised tho committee's action in failing to grant a lease to the Hutt Valley Trotting Club. It was pointed out that only the amount owing for two years could bo sued for, and on the motion of Councillor Kempthorne it was agreed to write to tho Hutt Park Committee, claiming the rates on the Park for two years, at £27 per year, and offering to write off three years' rates.
