NOTES AND COMMENTS

[By: Glßnooe.l Owners are reminded that acceptances for all events at the Masterton Racing Club's : Meeting close at -10 o'clock to-night with the club's secretary, Mr. A. Hathaway. "Sentinel" says that Oharmilla, Samiel, and Skene Dhu will not start in the Dunedin Guineas to-day. Skene Dhu met with injuries while travelling from Christchurch to Wingatui. Mr J. Buckley's two-year-old filly Aye Ready (All Red—Hermosa) had to be eased in her work a few days ago, and hence may not be seen at the DiJ.G. Meeting, which opens to-day. The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Spring Meeting takes place at Hastings to-morrow. Some of the owners and trainers at the Kotow meeting were landed in a quandary owing to the fact, so it is said, that none of the local knights of the anvil would plate horses engaged to race there (says the "Otago Witness") A well-known trainer, who is also a Vulcan, stepped wtt. tho breach, and plated some of the runners; but matters would have taken an awkward turn had he not been present at the meeting.' Racing clubs should officially engage and pay a bonus to a farrier in order to secure his presence at a meeting, and so kill the chance of what would develop into a very awkward state of affairs. Too much metal in one place generally means a serious'loss of it in another, unless one is aware that a' horse is handicapped at both the top and bottom of its frame. All Ready is the first of All Rod's stock to race. He finished unplaced in a hack race at Kotow last week. Tho Hastings trainer J. Cameron, who was kicked by a horse at tho Napier Park Meeting, was fortunate enough to escape without having any bones broken. When Freak'foll in the Taradalo Hurdle Race at Greenmeadows on Saturday, anil rolled over his rider, Meagher, it looked as if the latterwas badly hurt. When first examined it was thought that ho had escaped with a bruised leg and a shaking, but a subsequent examination disclosed the fact that tho leg was fractured just.above the ankle, and he was removed to the hospital. • Qmdic, who is engaged in the Eleo

trie Handicap at Dunedin to-day, won tho Taioma Hack Handicap at the; same fixture last year, and ran second in tho Kaikorai Handicap on tho second day of the meeting. On Saturday tho A.J.C. Meeting will bo brought to a close at Randwick, arid tho Victoria Amateur Turf Clubs Spring Meeting will bo opened at Caulfield. At the latter fixture, the principal event for decision is the Toorak Handicap. The Caulfield Onp is not run until October 17. Probably there will not be more than four starters in the Dunedin Gumeas to-day. Several Trentham horses will leave for Opaki on Monday in order to compote at tho Mustcrton Racing Club's Meeting. Advice from Auckland states that the Phoebus Apollo gelding Delegate is not to be persevered with at present, and he is to be sent hack,to his owner's place at Pukekoho. Notwithstanding his penalty Reputation may start a pronounced favcuntc in tho Hawke's 'Bay Guineas to-mor-row. Campeador's last two performances will no doubt bring him a good deal of support, _ but not sufficient to make him favourite. After paying £4380 6s. 3d. in Government tax, an increase of stakes of £1000, and writing off as depreciation £350 4s. Id., tho Gisborne Racing Club made a of £283 6s. 7d. on last season's, working. In the Hastings Stakes to-morrow, Asterias and Gold Foil will fight their battle of last Saturday over again./ A material difference in the conditions will, however, exist inasmuch as Asterias will meet his conqueror on much better terms. The Pahiatua Racing Club hold a meeting this week, when the Gaming Amendment Bill was discussed. It was decided, says our correspondent, to apply to the Minister of. Internal Affairs for a totalisator permit for the club, which had lost its permit as a result of tho Racing Commission's finding some time back. It was pointed out that tho Pahiatua Club was the only one of its kind in tho Forty-Mile Bush district, whilo the racecourse was considered an excellent one by horse-owners. It was ; decided to send a deputation to Wellington in support of the application, and also to ask the president of the 'Country Racing Clubs' Association to support the application. Tho meeting was subsequently addressed by Mr. Shallcrass, orgamsei for the Now Zealand Sports Protection League. The speakefagreed that the club had been suffering disabilities during the past two years. FIXTURES. Oct. 9 and 10.—Dunedin J-.C. Spring. Oct. 10—Hawke's Bay J.C. Spring. Oct. 15-Masterton R.C.
