THE EARTHQUAKE
UNUSUAL SIGNS AT WHITE ISLAND FURTHER TREMORS AT T9KOMARU (By Telegraph-Press Association.) Clsborne, October 8. No further trace of Percy Jones, the shepherd, who was- lost at Cape Runaway, and it is feared the body never will bo recovered, owing to the great quantity of earth under which, presumably, he is buried. Jones had a narrow escape from being engulfed in a landslido at Mangatu during the flood of 1906, when Tiifen's house was carried away. Opotiki reported last evening that White Island was belching black smoke. This is a very unusual thing. Tokomaru Bay reports ' a further slight shock at 1.30 this morning, but no further'damage has been done. Later. Tokomaru Bay reports a slight shook at 8 last night, and a sharp shock at 2.10 this afternoon. ' MOKOIA'S EXPERIENCE AT SEA. TREMBLES FROM-STEM TO STERN. Clsborne, October 8. When the steamer Mokoia was off Cape Runaway yesterday morning the vessel was suddenly brought almost to a dead stop and trembled violently. Tho first conclusion was that her propeller had, stripped or the steamer had struck some submerged object, but, Captain Drowetto, knowing he was in 800 fathoms of water, and ten miles off land, and finding no damage to the vessel, concluded that an earthquake "was responsible. The. vessol's masts rocked, and tho whole ship quivered from end to end, the sensation boggaring description. The steamer was then thirty miles from White Island.
