PRICE OF BREADSTUFFS

STATE CONTROL

ORDER-IN-COUNCIL ISSUED

The proclamation .to fix'the prices of wheat and flour was issued by the Government yesterday. Following is the text of the proclamation:—

' "So long as this Order-in-Conncil remains in force the maximum price of milling-wheat throughout New Zealand shall be 4s. 9d. per. bushel, free on hoard, on the usual trade terms, at the nearest port; and in case of salo otherwise than free, on board on the usual trade terms at the nearest' port, then the maximum price shall he a price equivalent, as regards the seller, to the maximum price above-mentioned.

"When the nearest port is Lyttelton, Timaru. or Oamaru, ■ tho maximum wholesale price of flour shall, so long ae this Order-in-C'onncil remains in force, he £11 los. per ton, free on board, on the -usual terms, at the nearest port; and in case of. sale otherwise- than free on board on the \isual trade terms at the nearest port, tjion the maximum price shall be a price equivalent, as regards the seller, to the maximum price abovo-mentioned.

■ " 'Nearest nort' means tho port of entry under tho Customs Act, 1913, at which, or nearest to which, the goods to which the contract relates, or whioii aTe appropriated to the contract, are situated when th 6 contract is made, or when they first thereafter come into tho possession or disposition of the seller.

. "Nothing in this Order-in-Council shall apply to tho sale of flour in any case in which the nearest port, as herein defined, is any port other than Lyttelton, Timnru,' and Oamaru."

RATES CONTRASTED. The prices fixed by tho Government for wheat and Hour are abovo normal prices, but below those which havo been ruling during the past fortnight. There have been no quotations given in Wellington for milling-wheat for aboiit a fortnight past, but last week fowls' wheat was being quoted in town at ss. sd. per hnshol, which is Bd. per bushel abovo the price fixed for milling-grain (•Is. 9d. per bushel). The price for flour has been fixed at £11 los. per tan freo on board in the south. This is also well under the last iiiotatinn made in Wellington, which was £13 10s. in tho south, a price forced on buyers chiefly owinji to tho stoppage of Australian supplies. The prices fixed are considered veiry fair to all parties, and will doubtr. less be a factor in tho liberation of stocks which may have been held (in the south) against a further rise. As a matter of fact looai merchants have been unable to obtain a guaranteed supply of flour from the south for the past fortnight, as millers have been holding back until they nficcrtnined the result of the Foodstuffs Commission,
