Sergeant Matthews telegraphed to Superintendent Kioly "tin's afternoon :— "I have just landed at White Island, ihero is no trace of-anything; evorytliins is buried—sheds, machinery, and camp. h appears that about twenty acres: were blown up, nnd lake has disappeared. Presumably the eruption occurred a fortnight ago."
