ROUND THE BOWLING GREENS

OPENING OF THE SEASON. The warm bright days and almost too dry weather tells of an early summer, the delight of all keen bowlers. Already there has been a little play on some of tlie greens, but that, has been merely in the nature of a test roll-up, and no serious games have yet been played. In the bowling world, however, the air is full of opening-day talk, and already it is said that teams are being got together in view of the sear son's matches. The following opening days have.been practically decided upon: —September; 26, Karori Club;. October 3, Wellington, Thorndon, Newtown, and Te Hiwi Clubs; October 10, Lyall Bay and Johnsonville Clubs; October 10 or 17, Victoria, Hutt. and Petone Clubs. .' The Hataitai Club is to hold its annual meeting'to-morrow evening, when a decision will be made as to the opening date of the green. .The Kelburn Club has a new green, with the'grass just sprouting through the top-dress-ing, and it is not expected, that there will bo any play on it until half-way through November. The growth of tho grass has been through the very dry weather experienced during the past two months; The greens gen-, orally are in a very good condition. Both of Wellington's, greens are looking particularly well, and players may expect a considerable improvement in the top green on- its condition last seaeon. Thorndon's greens aro looking really well. . One could not find a patch as big as a- threepenny bit that has not a good thatch of grass, and member.* are, confident that it will be amongst tho very host greens in the City this season.. The Victoria green has" undergone careful treatment during the recess, and it is hoped that it will wear better' than last season. Tho Seatoun greon has been judiciously nursed during tho winter, and members will have no. cause for complaint when they are called to tho colours on Saturday fortnight. The fine' Newtown green is also said to be in good order and condition, and there is nothing to complain about in tho, aspect of the Hataitai and Karori ereens. The latter club is to "open tho ball" on Saturday next.
