OBITUARY

; THE REV. H. B. REDSTONE.. Many in Wellington will regret to hear of the death of the Rev. H. B. Redstone, which occurred suddenly yesterday afternoon. The late Mr. Redstone, who had not been feeling very, well owing to a slight cold, attended service at Taranaki Street" Methodist Church yesterday morning, and had reached his home in Upper Hawker Street. There he rested on a chair on the verandah whilst the midday meal was being' prepared,' and there, after an absence of a few minutes only, he was discovered dead by his sister-in-law, Mrs. Redstone, of Gisbome, baring apparently passed peacefully away., through a failure of the heart's action. The Rev. Mr. Redstone was born in. Newquay, in the parish, of Tavistock, Devonshire (England), on March 4, 1836. _ In the Old Country he became an active worker as a preacher attached to the United Methodist Free Church, and by that organisation he was dispatched to New Zealand, arriving in Auckland in January, 1871, en route to Napier, where he very successfully established the church on a euro foundation. After five years in Napier, he was transferred to Wellington, and itwas during his ministry here that the fine United Methodist Free .Church was built in Courtenay Place, on thr 6ite at present occupied by His Majesty Theatre. After being nine years in Wellington, Mr. Redstone was transferred to Christchurch, and when the union took place .between the Bible Christian Methodist Church, the Wesleyon Methodist Church, and the United Methodist Free Church in 1896, he. though still an active worker, wa6 not given a fixed station, but frequently gave 'relief wherever his services were required,, and from that date (1896) he has been in receipt of .a superannuation allowance. The deceased clergyman was much respected by all who knew him. His was a kindly, loving disposition, and he was held in much esteem. He leaves a widow and two daughters, Mrs. Sutherland, of Wellington, v and Mrs. Fee, wife of the Rev. Thomas Fee, of Christchurch. His brothers are Messrs. W. E. Redstone, of. Wellington, Mr. John Redstone, of Gisbome, Mr; James Redstone, of Tavistock'. (England). His onlv sister, Mrs: H. L. Wilkinson, resides at Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. Th«i funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon. . ' ■ ■
