TAXI-CAB STANDS
, ; — EXTENSION IN FEATHERSTON ' STREET. Tho matter of taxi-cab stands in Featherston Street was brought.up at tho Uity Council meeting last night, when the By-laws Committee- recommended the adoption of the City Engineer's proposal on the matter. The, uty Engineer (Mr. W. H. Norton) reported mat he had, in company with liio lUotor Inspector (Mr. Urnko) closely inspected mo locality in which the taxi-cabs wero at present principally congregated, and ha-d also interviewed taxi-cao proprietors. He recommended a trial.of tho following proposal:—Hunter- Street stand to he abolished, as being now unnecessary. Six cars to bo located in Feat'herston btreot, between the northern building hue of Hunter Street and the entrance to Messrs. Nathan's ; warehouse. Four cars to be located in Featherston Street between. Brandon Street aud Panama Street. Four cars to bo located in Brandon Street close to Featherston Street, leaving an interval between those cars and the cars in tho same street, near Lamb-ton Quay. By the proposal accommodation would be providedJor twenty cars in Brandon and Featherston Streets, and it would be possible for the cars to work towards the head of the stand at the inte-rsec-. tion of Featherston Street and Lambton Quay. - The engineer believed the proposal would give satisfaction. He also proposed that the cars should stand ,111 the centre of each thoroughfare, as this would conduce to better order. He suggested that some regulation should be framed w'Jiich would prevent the spilling of carbide and oil on the street surfaces. •' . Councillor R. Fletcher thought the proposal to allow the taxis to stand in the middle, of tho road, in front of the post oiiico, was absolutely absurd. Councillor J. E. Fitzgerald pointed out that a great deal'of oil was being allowed to collect on the wood blocks in Brandon Street. This constituted a danger, and provision should b.e madefor spreading sand over any collection of oil or grease. I Councillor W. H. P. Barber (chairman of tho committee) corrected his I-statement that the cars will he allowed Ito stand in front' of the post olhce. The post ofiico section of the street was excepted, and the stand began again at Panama Street, and extended to Brandon Street. Councillor Fletcher thought that the proposed ciiango was a bad move, and would cause congestion. Tho. extracars should be put down Hunter Street. Councillor J. Gotlber: It is only a trial. If it is not a success we can no back to the side of tho road. ° Councillor Bafflier —id that thfero were more taxis than stands. "It was a question whether- they should not iestrict the number of licenses issued to taxis. „ _.., Councillor Fitzgerald: Did you consider the matter of the taxi-mou con r gregating on the road? Councillor Barber: Yes; and if the taxis were in tho middle of the road thev would have to stay on thoir cars. The recommendations of the. Engineer were carried, Councillor Fletcher ■ voting in opposition. Instruction was also given to the City Solicitor to draw up the necessary by-laws to control tho matter.
