NOTES AND COMMENTS

[Bx GLtSCOE.I I

Indulgence bfoko down on Monday morning while being exercised on tho tan track m Ellerslie, a ligament being bady sprained. It may meanher retirement from the Turf for all time. All sorts of rumours were afloat on Monday relating to tho breakdown of Merry Roe, but these were set at rest on Tuesday, morning by her appearance on the Ellerslie track, though it was noticeable her task, was a light one on the tan (says the "New Zealand.Herald"). S'ho was withdrawn from the Avondale Cup in favour of her stable companion Bleriot. If Mr. W. G. Stead elects to start. Steiiihail m the Durie Hack Handicap at Wanganui instead of in the Guineas, the half-sister to Bon Ton may be expected to run ' very prominently, for she is in at tho minimum. At Dannevirke she contested the Otanga Handicap, an open event, and finished fourth. At Hastings Mummer is galloping very pleasingly in his work. He is to be railed- to Wanganui on Monday and is sure to give a good, account of himself in whichever race his owner elects to start him. It is quite on the cards that ivere lie to win the Flying Handicap he would be saddled up again and put up a 71b. \ penalty in the 1 Spring Handicap, which 'is run later on in tho day. Some of the leading local horsemen are not in the habit of attending at Ellerslie' for the purpose of riding work as regularly as they ought to be (says the Auckland "Star"), aud when their applications for licenses are being reviewed one or two of them will probably be reminded of this fact. The Ellerslie trainer J. Williamson leaves on a holiday trip to Sydney by the Mahono on Monday next. The Auckland studraaster, Mr. C. R. Bailey, had a valuable addition to his stock on Saturday last, when Lynda Downs foaled a colt to Grattan Abbey. Lynda Downs is by Marvin Wilkes (2.12£) out ■ of Elsio Downs, dam of Alto Down (2,10), First Voyage (4.59), eta The youugsier has four strains of the famous blood of the Electioneer— Wilkes cross. Weights for, the Otaki Meeting are due to-day. Nominations for the Napier Park Spring Meeting close to-night. The Avondale Jockey Club's Spring Meeting will he concluded to-morrow, when the, Guineas will be decided. Bedford (J. Conquest) 'and Mullingar (B. Deeloy) may be the favourites. Latest reports from Riccarton state that Nightwatch is again suffering from leg trouble, and he is an unlikely starter at Wanganui'. Quite a number of Riccarton-trained horses are at present suffering from colds, but fortunately the ailment is not of a violent nature. The Blenheim trainer W. Gillet has , removed his team to Trentham. Included among his horses is the useful handicap performer Imarose. King's Courier, the colt that recently brought 500 guineas, was' a good favourite in tho Avondale Stakes on Wednesday, but ho misconducted himself at the barrier, and the field was sent off without him. At tho Elderslie. Stud, Sir James Carroll's mare' Arai-te-uru (Birkenhead —Fiji- Nell). has foaled a filly, to .the imported Jiilbroncy, and visit's him again this season. It is not unlikely that Mr. Harvey Patterson may send Fabrikoif over to Melbourne to contest the Victoria Derby in November, but no definite decision has been arrived at up to tho present. Tho colt is going along well in his work at Riccarton, and on Tuesday he defeated Silver Shield in a gallop over a mile. ' .
