(From Our Special Correspondents.) MASTERTON. As aflresult; of a visit to Wellington of the Mayor; aud Councillor Sellar, it is anticipated that the Masterton Borough Council will secure £5000 from the Advances to Settlers Board for expenditure on the water extension works. It is hoped that' tho balance of the loan ma.y be arranged by the issuing of debentures. The Masterton dairy \ factory was opened on Friday for the reception of cream. The collection of cream by -motor will be commenced almost immediately! The members of the Red Star. Football Club, which won the championship this year, were entertained at a smoke concert by Mr. J. Scorrar on Thursday evening. Tho shop of Mr.' Robert Russell, sec-ond-hand dealer, was burglariously entered a few nignts ago, but nothing of value 'was removed. The workers' dwellings in Masterton will shortly be out of the builders' hands. A start will be made soon , with the erection of the new municipal buildings, for which a loan of £10,000 was recently approved. Professor Ernest W. Brown, D.So., F.R.S., of the Yale University, is expeoted to arrive in Wellington on Wednesday next. He will visit his sister} Mrs. J. C. York, of Masterton, and will sail for the United States about the end of the month. . The Rev. (J. N. Sheldon, D.D., will visit Masterton on October il, and deliver an address on tho liquor question in; the Town Hall. , Horses numbering about 200 have been supplied by tho Wairarapa to tho Expeditionary Force. The cost to the War Fund was only £1605: .". f ln tlie courso of his address to the farmors of Masterton, Major Norton stilted that, for all commercial purposes, New Zealand butter was quite equal to that of Denmark.
The manager of tho Bristol and Dominions' Producers' Association told a meeting of farmers in Alasterton that hk had made inquiries and discovered that in New Zealand there was only fctorage capacity for eighteen _ days' killing at the freezing works during the flush of the season. >
CARTERTON. The annual meeting of the Carterton Bowling (Jlub was held on Thursday evening, Mr, A. Phillpotts (president) in the chair. _ A satisfactory financial position was disclosed. . Trophies were presented to Messrs. E. A. Hall and E. Smith, winners of the season's pairs tournament, to Messrs. Masson and Harp, the runners-up, and to Mr. "W. Spooner, winner of the singles contest for new players.. Officers, were elected as under Patron, Sir Walter Buchanan, M.P.; president,. Mr. G. HughaD; vice-president, Mr. D. Reid; hon. secretary, Mr. F. Lindop; treasurer, Mr. W. H. Whyte; green committee, Messrs. Fisher and Roydhouse; match committee, Messrs. Masson, H. Hall, and Roydhouse; general _ committee, Messrs. Phillpotts, Harp, King, Masson, Pink, Higgins, and H. Hall; centre delegates, Messrs. Hughan, Phillpotts, 1 and Fisher; auditor, " Mr. Roydhouse. Mr. F. Lindop was appointed on the refreshment committee. The president, Mr. Hughan, promised trophies ti the value of three guineas for next season's pairs tournaments. It was decided that the pairs tournament, for the en-, suing year -be a sealed handicap. The membership was reported at 51 full members, and 17 honorary. A vote of thanks was passed to all who had assisted during the year. At a meeting of the St. John Ambulance Class on Thursday. evening the members placed on record their appreciation of the kindness and assistance given to them by various townspeople during the session, special mention being made of Drs. Bey and Johnston, Mes-dames-Dooly and Dakin, the Rev. L. Thompson, the Fire Brigade, Scoutmaster F. Roydhouse, and Scouts, and Mr. V. Vennell.
