THOSE "HURDLES"
■DAMAGE CABS PROCEEDING AT , TEN MILES. AN HOUR, ■ '■ ' - -The raisod crossings—commonly called /motor . hurdles"—constructed 'by the Pctono Ijorough Council . at various points alone the Hutt Road, are, apparently, still a source.of danger and .annoyance to motorists, as thefollow-in"-correspondence between Dr. G. E. .Ah' son, of Lower Hutt, and the Petone Council will show:— -. ; LowerHutt, ■ . ' . • ' August '6, 1914. lho Mayor of Petone, . '" , , 'Borough-Council Chambers, Petone. Dear a second time my mo-tor-car has suffered damage to' its spiings r as a result,of travelling at a pace of under 10 miles an hour over the obstructions which your council has placed across the highway near the Railway Station. Careful and steady driving motorists; like myself aro boginning to lose patience. We aro careful to drive' at a 'moderate pace and with due regard to tho convenience of others, and Ave fail to see why our ears should be destroyed by obstruction.'! erected to save you the trouble of proper policing and of. keeping 'in check, furious driving.'—l am, vours sincerely' GEORGE ANSON, M.D. Petone, August 19/ 1914, Dr: G;'E. Anson.. Main Street, Lower Hutt. ! Dear-Sir,—Your letter of 6th. instant advising that your motor-car. suffered damage to.its springs when proceeding along the Hutt Road was duly placed before my council at its last meeting, when I-was instructed to reply stating that the council cannot accept any lia°bility in tho matter .-.Fours faithfully, W, J. GARDNER, Town Clerk.
I • Main Road, Lower Hutfc. ■ . .A.urrust. 20, • 1914. , The: Town Clerk, Petonc. .Dear Sir,—l received to-day Tour curt reply to my letter of 6th instant, i'ou will kindly notice that I did not ask your council to accept any liability for tho damage done to my-car. .It was therefore quit© unnecessary to volunteer the information that it cannot accept any liability therefore. I am afraid, it is vain to hope your council may be induced to reconsider its seilish and hostile, attitude towards the travelling publis in general and'its neighbours of V/ellington and Lower Kutt _in particular. I ■ cannot believe lhat it can'.bo legal—it.certainly is not moral—to damage wilfully the property of law-abiding citizens on the King's Highway; or to erect obstacles, not properly .lighted at night, which are capable of damaging inoffensive- citizens in life or. limb.—l am, yours faith, fully, GEORGE E. ANSON, M.D.
