. ♦—_ SATURDAY'S FIELD SPORTS RUGBY ABANDONED ENGLISH LEAGUE BEATS AUCKLAND All the Wellington Rugby Union's local fixtures for Saturday afternoon were postponed on account of the wet and intensely cold weather. A curious difficulty arose over the postponement of tho Petone match, which was not authorised by Mr. W. I 6. Talbot, secretary of the Rugby Union tilb about 12.20. The gatekeepers at th© Petono ground were not advised of the decision, and at 2.30 p.m. were at their posts, and before they were officially told of tho postponement had taken money at the gate's.. 'Shortly after _ about thirty persons clamoured, and jostled one another to get their - share of the takings, which totalled five shillings. But the crowd was quietly told (and the Mayor afterwards endorsed this) that no money was to bejefunded, but if each person would apply to ■ the Petone Borough Council they, would bo treated fairly, IN OTHER CENTRES. The ground was in capital order. There-was no score until well on into the first spell, when Collerton ran through the visiting backs and touched ' down between the posts. The try was not improved Upon. In the second half ■ Waiiganui's 'points were added to by Bellis, who dashed over. The kick at goal narrowly missed. Immediately after, Wanganui's backs set off on a passing rush, R. Collier scoring a line try just in from the-corner. The annual Rugby representative match, Bush versus Dannevirke, played here to-day, resulted in a handsome win. for the Bush team "by 19 to 3. The ground was heavy from the previous night's rain. In tlw first spell, k. Mei-. ted and T. Avery scored tries for the winners, A. Mexted converting one try ' and also a goal from a mark,, while Alexander scored a try tor Dannevirke. In the second spell, playing against the wind, Goklio and Mexted secured two tries for the Bush. The Bush forwards played a great game, beating the opposition right through. This is the first . occasion that the Bush' representatives * have beaten Dannevirke for several; years. AUCKLAND MATCHES. ' "" Auckland, .'July 26. The Auckland' junior representatives .' defeated Thames juniors by 9 points to 3. The game was played in showery weather. Watson and Swaffield scored tries, and Clarke kicked a penalty goal for Auckland, while, Blackwell scored a try for Thames.
