NEW CARS & CARSHEDS
THE TRAMWAY SERVICE
BUILDING PROGRAMME
lu connection'with., the building of new t'raincars and the conversion of existing cars, the Tramway Board of Management last night submitted the following report to the City Council:— "There are at present in the new workshops at Newtown five cars, three building and two being converted. Subject to there being no delay in the arrival of equipment, now cars Nos. 98 to .109 will be completed between now and July of next year, and it is hoped that by Christmas of this year eight additional new cars, will be available for traffic for dealing with the holiday rush. The conversion of the 14 cars yet remaining to be altered to comply with Government regulations will be completed by December 20 next.
_ "There are at present. 1G cars off the pits at the Newtown Carsheds during the night time, of which nine are entirely outside the building. It will therefore be seen that the number of cars which are not properly housed and which therefore cannot be properly attended to will bo considerably increased. We have to draw attention to this in order that the council may see the desirability, of proceeding with the new carsheds as recommended; at the earliest • possible date, and we strongly recommend the council to take immediate steps for this work to be done, as the overhaul_ and adjustment of cars not over pits is rendered very much, more difficult, and proper attention cannot .be given to,the equipment, including brakes, and in addition cars not sheltered at night deteriorate more rapidly. Whilst on this matter we also desire to point out the great urgency which exists for' at onco proceeding with the extension of . the Cotistable Street tramway, with the Kilbirnie tramway, at the Lyall Bay Road, as the difficulty in coping with the traffic on the existing tunnel route is attended with considerable risk, and any delay occasioned by one car dislocates the running on this route, which has become the! most ■ important in this: system. ,
"We strongly recommend the council to give these matters earnest attention with a view to proceeding with these works at the earliest possible moment."
, The Tramways Committee recommenided .that tho board's report be adopted and given effeot to.
. Discussion of the . report was held over until the council went ■ into committee. On resuming from committee, the council adopted the report except in- so far as it referred to proceeding with the proposed Constable Street extension. This latter portion of the report will be dealt with when the loanproposals are before the council at the special meeting to be held on Thursday next. ...
