A HOSPITAL APPOINTMENT
MOTION- TO DEFER IT. , At the monthly meeting of the Wellington Hospital Board yesterday, Mr. B. R. Gardener, of Levin, moved that the appointment of a medical tuberculosis officer, conditions of whose appointment had been cabled to the High Commisisioner in London, to be given effect to, be postponed for six months. In addition to his salary of . £600 a' year, said Mr.' Gardener, the board had to pay, this doctor's passage and" find him a house,. He, as representative of a country district, objected to the additional cost , that would be thrown upon his district, and he quoted figures to show the growth in contributions from his and other districts. Besides, they had Dr. Hutliwaite at Otaki, who had made a specialty of - the study of this disease. Was it fair that a man should bo imported that would override Dr. Huthwaite?
Mr. Van Stavoren pointed out that Mr. Gardener was inconsistent, as he had been the first to movo for such ail appointment. Mr. Gardener objected to another £100 being added to the salary by the committee.
•Tho chairman said that, the. discussion was out of order, as the appointment had. been decided upon. Mr. Gardener then- said that he would give notice to rescind the appointment. The board, on' the voices, decided' to go on with the appointment.
