ASSOCIATION
WEDNESDAY V. ROYAL NAVY. _ All the "big guns", in Navy "Soccer" circles m New Zealand were transferred to.Kilbirnie Park yesterday afternoon, in anticipation of a great battle against the local Wednesday representatives. ■ the elements were in favour of a keen struggle—a bright-day and little wind. The teams appeared to be evenly matched, and the 200 or so spectator*, were treated to a spleidid, game of football. Play was good all tho way through the first half, the Navy men having the better of matters, their combination being superior to that of the . Wellington team, especially between the'halves and forwards. After a spell of give-and-take play, Mouat scored Wellington's first goal after a fine run up the centre. This reverse put the lad's in navy blue on their'mettle, and they' made the game'fast and willing. Some exciting play followed, and : subsequently English, the visitors' right half, scored a beautiful goal from the touchline. From now on till half-time the Navy men had much the, better of the game. The. second half opened quietly, but soon the man-'o-warsmen obtained the upper handj and till the call of time they, were co.utiaually on the attack. Their halves played a great game, and kept Wellington's forwards well iri hand'. Before the end; came goals were scored by Newman (2) and Baker, for the man-'o-warsmen, and the conclusion saw the defeat of .Wellington'by four goals to one. . ' .

WEDNESDAY ASSOCIATION. RESULT OF MATCHES. Hcreawa 3 Ramblers A ' 1 Petono 4 Pakeha 1 Hui Mai 9 Kamblers B 1 The Wednesday competitions advanced another-stage yesterday afternoon. All tho games wore played at Karori, the grounds being in good condition. The play all through was not up to the usual standard. HEREAWA V. RAMBLERS A. From the bully-off Hereawa carried play into Ramblers' quarters, but a fine' drive bv Needham shifted the struggle over the half-way line. The forwards on both sides put .in some fine stick work. From a passing rush, started by Schauer, Hereawa forwards had play in Ramblers' circle, and Caterer finished up by finding tho net. Play was at the Hcreawa end for some time, and Ramblers lost a chance to score by bad shooting. Hereawa again got going, and soon had Ramblers on the defensive, 1 and a nice centre by Caterer saw Schauer add tho second goal for Hereawa.
_ In the second spell, Ramblers, play-. ing with better combination,, soon had Hereawa in trouble, and fro_m a.scramble in the circle Bentley shot a goal. Play for a time was very even, if anything, in favour of Ramblers,. but bad shooting lost them many chances of scoring. From a corner-hit, Caterer shot a fine goal Ramblers were making l the game open, but could hot score. The play was in midfield when tho whistle sounded. ■, Mr. J. C. Cusack was referee. PETONE V. PAKEHA. This was a hard-fought game, in which play was more strenuous than brilliant. Petono won by 4 goals to 1. In the.first spell, Petone hadniuch the best of tho game, Cavell putting in two goals. In the second spell,' Pakeha opened well, Sheeran scoring from a forward rush. From a scramble in Pakeha's circle, Hecker found the net, and just before time,'M'Ewan added another goal for Petone. The call of time found Petone attacking. Mr. W. Cooper was referee. HUI MAI V; RAMBLERS 8.. Hui Mai had an easy win over Ramblers B. '' In -the first spell, Bree, for Hui Mai, registered two goals, while in the second spell goals were scored by Lewer (3), Brooker (2), Shill (1), and Bay (1). Just before the call of time, Duff found the net for,' Ramblers. The E*me ended: Hui Mai, 9; Ramblers, 1. Mr. B. Burn was referee. ■ WAIKATO DEFEAT WAIRARAPA. (Br Telegravfl.—Prem- Association.* ' i ; Hamilton, July 22. For tho fourth- time this season, Waikato to-day successfully defended th<> Nordon Cup, this time against Wairarapa at Hamilton. The ground was muddy. . The superior combination of the _ home team resulted in a win for Waikato by four goals to one. Buv for the excellent defence of the visiting backs, the result must have been more disastrous to Wairarapa.
ENGLISH HOCKEY GIRLS
TO ARRIVE HERE NEXT WEEK. '..The English ladies' hockey team,' which arrives hero from Sydney *on Wednesday .next,' play the iirst match of its tour through;. the Dominion against Wellington', at the' Basin Re.serve;.on .the following Saturday. The following reoord of .the matches played m Australia indicates that they are a strong .combination, and give promise that they will provide some very interesting exhibitions of fhd game during their .tour through New Zealand. Particulars of the games played are as follow:—Versus South Australia, ■won 3 —o: v. Victoria, won 15—0; v. New South Wales, won 11—3; v. Tasmania, won 12—1; v'. New. South Wales, won 7—3; v. South Australia, won 7— 0; v. Victoria, won 9—o; v. South. Australia, won 6—o. This gives a total as follows:—Matches,, played, 8; won, 8; goals for, 70; goals against, 7. Ac-cording-to the Sydney "Referee" -the English team is one with great experience in the game,- the. captain, Miss Gascell, having been for years one of the foremost players'at Home. "The side is physically powerful and fast, and their shooting good. Generally, they contrast vividly with the youthful who have all the dash and determination desirable, but aw wanting in cool-heads and nice judgment. The _ forwards sweep down the field, each in her, allotted area, with pace that gives none' but the coolest back a chance of clearing and placing atthe same time. Miss Gascell. and Miss Eames show a wonderful facility for mentally photographing the., position of the opposing forces? '.'Unlike' the Australians, the English halves followed closely in the wake of ; their 'everalert vanguard. A-ball lost by a tackle or faulty stick work-was at. once fed back to- their forwards, and away they would' go, the ball 'bewilderinglv .elusive under their clever stick play."
