WEBB CHALLENGED
FOR ROWING CHAMPIONSHIP OF . NEW ZEALAND, ;: , Seeing that Fogwell beat Whelch for . the professional rowing championship of New Zealand, and that since, that event the title has not been rowed for, it,would be assumed that Fogwell'was the champion. On ihat" assumption ', Hannon' : challenged Fogwell oyer two months, ago, when the latter forfeited. Webb, of AVahjjanui{ has put in aclaim .for the championship,' and though his . grounds to be regarded as. the liblder of the title do not hold water, with the rowing authorities in Sydney, Hannon is conceding him tho honour. Tho latter oarsman—a Wellington' man—has been endeavouring to. bring about a match'with Webb since his'arrival here ' some two months ago; Now ho has succeeded, in getting a backing, for £100, ■and on Monday last formally challenired Wobb to row for the championship of New Zealand and £100 aside. Witn •the challenge (which was forwarded tothe Wanganui "Herald") was a cheque for £10, ; the first deposit on the-stake. It now remains for Webb to take tis the challenge "and arrange a date for the match without delay—if he intends to defend the t'itlo he claims. Webb is anexcellent sport who has never, side-step-ped > a challenge wlien the money is up, and the rowing community may look • forward with confidence to an interesting race. Webb's W'anganui friends state that he can "come back"-because he never went away. .
