THE HON. RICHARD AMOORE
The Hon..Richard Moore, of Kaiapoi. ranks among the pioneer settlors of Canterbury.' He was born in T-onrW in 1840, and arrived iii Noiv Zealand bv the ship Steadfast, a few - moliths lifter _ the. Pilgrims had. landed' from the historic first four -ships. Ho enter-, ed into business on his own-account, an'd. later took im the c;rain trade, in l-ho Kaiapoi district. Ho took an interest in public affairs, ami bccamo a member of file Kaiapoi Borough Coimcil and of the Waimakariri Harbour Board. Air. Moore .served for four years as Ma*pr of Kaiapoi and fnr eiVbt or liiue years as chairman of the 8011001 Committee. besides filling various oilier local offices. Ho first contested the Kaiapoi constituency in 1883, and in IR9O n'ns elected. At the following election Mr. D. Burldo won the seat, but in 1836 Mr. Moore defeated Mr. • Buddo nwl bad a second term in Parliament. 'Mr. Moore is at oresent chairman of the Lyttolton Harbour Board.
