THE HON. T. MACGIBBON
The Hon. T. MacGibhou came io New Zealand as a lad, witli his father and mother, arriving by the ship Blmulell in 18*18. Mr. Mac Gibbon worked with Jiis father, and as lfe grew up did his •share of pioneering in the very early dnvs. He drove teams of horses and bullocks through from the Taieii I,u Duuediii ijoi'oj'v there were any roads, in the early 'fifties Mr. MaeGililion went with his lather In Mataiua. Later Mr. Macfliblwn look up a small run with his I'allicr ami brother, and subsequently he was a mail contractor. nersliip with his brother/Mr. John MacGibboii, at tlio Falls and afterwards at Gore. Mr. Mac' Gibbon lias continued Ins connection with this business ever 'since.'* He entered public life as a member, of the Lyudhurst Road Board in tlio early 'sixties, and was ono of the lirst county councillors in the Southland County. * Later ho became chairman of tlio County Council. He was ono of tlio earliest members of tho Southland Education Board, and served upon it for twenty-live years, filling the office as chairman' on various occasions. Mr. Mac Gibbon was also a member of tho district Hospital Board, and ho -was I for nearly twenty years ono of the Otago and Southland School Comiuis-, sioners representing tlie Southland Education Board, and he was Mayor of Mataura,. on several occasions. He is i now a member of the Otago University Council representing the Southland Education Board. In 1903 ho stood for Parliament against Mr. M'Nab, but was defeated. For many years Mr. MacGibbon has been closely identified with the public life'of Mataura. Ho has a long record of service as a momber of the Gor© High School Board, and has been ono of the leading office-bearers in tho Mataura Presbyterian Church since, its foundation. Ho has conducted tlio Sunday School for fully forty years. Mr. Mac Gibbon was one of tho founders of the Southland Frozen Meat Company. THE HOiVO~SAMUEL The Hon. Mr. Samuel is a well-known barrister and solicitor who for ruaiiv yeans.has been closely identified w.itln the interests of the Taranaki district and in particular with Now Plymouth, whore he resides. He was elected as member for Parliament for New Plymouth in the second session of 1884, and he held his.seat till 1890, when ho retired from politics. When he was appointed in''-1907. by tho. Ward Govern- j mont as one of 14 now Councillors Mr. Massey (then in .Opposition) singled him out as the one man in the batch who would bo an acquisition to tho Upper House. . . THE HOn7lE" COLLINS TheHon.'Dr. W. E. Collins was horn in India and educated at .Cheltenham College and London University (of which he is a graduate), and St. George's Hospital, London. He holds the degrees of M.R.C.S. (Eng.) ind M.B. (London). , After being attached to the Brornptoh Hospital for Consumptives, Dr. Collins emigrated to Nelson. Ho subsequently practised in Wellington, and beoanie honorary surgeon to the Wellington District Hospital. He was one of the promoters of volunteer bearer corps, and in 1896 attained tho rank of surgeon-lieutenaut-colonol (Field. Artillery). Subsequently ho became principal medical officer in tlio Wellington military district. Another office filled by Dr. Collins was that of president' of the Military: Pension's Board. He was first called to the 'Legislative' Council in January, 1907, and his term of appointment expired in January last.
