GENERAL MANAGER RETIRING/ ■Mr. W. C. Gasquoine (General Manager of .the .State Coal Mines) intends to retire from that position about a month hence. : ■ ' , ■ ■ .. In future, it ,is intended that tho man-. aKeinenfejof* thp; ,gtato ~cp,al -jjlinflR j shall bo directed from- tho office of tho,Mines Department, instead of from a separate office, as heretofore.- This is part of a policy of centralisation which tho. Department is'pursuing, presumably with a view to securing greater eebnomy of management; ; Itis hoped, ultimately, to have the Geological Survey branch of the Department removed from : its present quarters in Feathorston Streot to tho head office'. '-' '■'•■■ > Mr. Gasquoine has been connected with the State Coal Mines Department for,seveial years. Hohad lengthy experience in tho coal industry on tho West Coast prior to taking up .his'residence in Wellington, many years ago. Aftef settling down hero ho was enRaged in the coal trade for some time, and'subsequently assumed the general managership, of the State coal mines. . The impending retirement, on superannuation, of Mr. J. Bishop, manager of the Point Elizabeth State mine, • is also announced. Mr. Bishop's position will be take,n by Mr. I. A. James, late manager of the Seddon'ville mine, which has recently been closed down. Mr. Bishop not only managed the present State coal mine at Point Elizabeth, some niiles out of Greymouth, but he has also opened out and brought into production the new State coal mine, about fiyo miles from tho present one, and which, has been named the Liverpool mine, after His Excellency tho Governor. This now mino has been developed and equipped jri a most up-to-date manner, and is likely to yield a large and continuous supply- of State coal. . ■ ■
