NOVEL DEMOLITION
FACTORY CHIMNEY BROUGHT : . DOWN BY RIFLE FIRE. (By Telegraph.—rresa Association.) ■ Invercargill, June 15. Singular methods haVo been applied to the. falling of a chimtiey at the Orepuki Slialo Works. About twelve months ago the- chimnoy was struck by 1 lightning, and was damaged to such an extent that it split from top to i bottom, and a vory considera-ble portion fell 'away.■.. The- portion remaining swayed playfully in the wind,, and, asit threat>ened to, fall on adjoining buildings, it Was decided to pull it down. The chim-' noy was, however, so insecure that no Workman could bp induced to carry out the work of affixing the taoklo, and it was, therefore, decided to drill throiigh the base- of what remained of tho chimney with riflo fire. ' A .303 riflo and a stock of ammunition wore procured, and at a safe distance a rifleman set about putting bullets into the base of the chimnoy. After a good deal of chipping tho structure tottored, and fell to tho grdUhd.. It is stated that the amount of ammunition used approximated two hundred rounds. '
